Went to a college basketball game last night,
The opponent left as losers, the home team played just right.
The other team had only lost one game, as had we,
But our team played better from the outset--plain to see.
By halftime, we were up 20 points or so,
I left at half time but enjoyed the show.
Having played Bball in college, played many times in that gym,
I remember dunking the ball, getting above the rim.
The bball season is long with 2 games/week,
You quickly find out your strengths and where you are weak.
But if I was the coach, occasionally I would leave the balls in the rack,
It's not skill that is needed, it's oxygen the players lack.
When you're not in shape, it shows up as weakness in your legs,
Your hands go to your knees--you clearly are sucking eggs.
The first half is fueled by adrenaline--things go just fine,
But the second half, your in-shape body declares "this game is mine".
So, coach, leave the balls in the rack and let those boys run,
Winning takes effort but being in shape sure is fun.
You see it in your opponents eyes, they cannot answer the bell,
If an athlete is not in top shape, the 4th quarter will tell.
PS.. Coaches can run laps too!
